Summer Student – Brockville Museum Community Engagement Assistant

The Brockville Museum seeks a Community Engagement Assistant (summer student) to help bring the museum out into the community and support the enhancement of museum programs that use local history to foster civism.

Under the supervision of the museum’s Community Program Coordinator, the Community Engagement Assistant will work to help advance the museum’s mission of fostering local civism by supporting the development and promotion of new and enhanced museum offerings that foster a sense of belonging and ensure residents feel connected to this community through the sharing of local history. This will include researching and helping to develop curriculum-based programs that combine local history and civics education. The Community Engagement Assistant will also help increase the museum’s visibility in the community by hosting pop-up displays and attending local festivals and events to promote museum services. This will include liaising with local businesses, the local tourism office, and local event organizers to arrange a schedule of pop-ups, as well as attending the pop-ups and engaging with attendees. The Community Engagement Assistant will also perform other museum duties as required.

The ideal candidate must possess a genuine interest in community outreach, such as an interest in sharing local history with the public or a passion for civic engagement, and be comfortable engaging with audiences of varying ages and backgrounds. Candidates should have demonstrated research, critical thinking, and presentation skills. Candidates must be comfortable navigating Windows operating system, using Microsoft Word and Excel, and demonstrate strong digital literacy skills. Comfort working independently, being a motivated self-starter, and possessing a willingness to learn and follow a set of procedures and standards are essential. Candidates must be able to perform medium physical labour, including lifting and carrying objects and boxes weighing up to 40 pounds. Previous museum or education experience or training will be considered an asset but are not required.

Preference will be given to a post-secondary student, enrolled in public history, public administration, education, communications, or related field, but qualifying high school students will be considered. Must meet Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations criteria, including being a returning full time student. Please note that this position is dependent upon funding approval, if funding is not received this position may not be filled.
