Building a Second Suite or Second Unit
Posted Jan-18-2021

Adding a Second Unit to an Existing House

A second unit is a self-contained dwelling unit within an existing house that contains a private kitchen, bathroom facilities, and sleeping area.

Before adding a second unit, you must speak with our local Planning Department and Building Department. They can tell you whether or not you can add a second unit on your property depending on your zoning, the Building Code, other applicable by-laws, and will get your started on the required application.

The Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has produced a reference guide on 'Adding a Second Unit in an Existing House' to help you understand all of the key  requirements that you will need to meet in order to add a legal second unit.
