The communications division of the Brockville Fire Department has four fulltime and two part-time personnel who dispatch all emergency calls to 13 Fire Departments. These people are responsible for information gathering at the time of the call, dispatching the correct department and giving directions to locations for the responding firefighters. These Dispatchers continue to support the on scene departments by contacting police, ambulance, or utilities as required by the Incident Commander. These Dispatchers also page out and request addition help from surrounding departments if requested. Keeping a chronological record of events as they happen and documenting arriving units is also a requirement of the Dispatcher's duties.

The communication department is also the answering service, after hours, for the City of Brockville. It is through this service that after hours calls for Animal Control. City Works and all other city services are paged out to accommodate the needs of the citizens of Brockville.

Fire Prevention:
Fire Prevention Division has basically three mandates
Public Education-
The best way to reduce fire loss is through public education. The Brockville Fire Prevention Division uses the following programs to better educate the public and reduce fire lose:

  • Older and Wiser Safety Program for Seniors
  • Risk Watch Injury Prevention Program for Children
  • TAPP-C Arson Prevention Program for Children
  • Hazard House
  • Fire Extinguisher Training Unit
  • Residential Home Inspection Program

Fire Cause Determination-
Determining how a fire started, who started it and so on helps us to develop and implement educational programs to prevent further fires of the same nature. If the fire was determined to be of other than an accidental nature the Fire Prevention Division assists investigators from Office of the Fire Marshal and the Police Department in the criminal investigation of the fire.

Code Enforcement-
The Brockville Fire Prevention Division has a responsibility to enforce the requirements of the Ontario Fire Code. The Fire Protection and Prevention Act and relevant sections of the Ontario Building Code and other applicable and referenced standards to ensure a minimum level of Life Safety is maintained in the various occupancies of the city. Inspections are done as requested by legal firms, insurance and mortgage agents as well as on a regular basis and upon complaint.

The Brockville Fire Department has been in existence for many years providing fire protection for the citizens of Brockville. Over the years this service has changed immensely going from horse drawn streamers to modern day custom pumper trucks. The role of the Fire Department has also changed, at first it's sole function was to provide fire suppression but with the ever changing demands of society the new Fire Department finds itself involved in many different activities.

Fire suppression is still the main function of the Fire Department. Providing a quick response in a professional manner to control loss of property and life is the top priority of this department. Well trained personnel and modern equipment deliver this service to our citizens and to the Corporations that call Brockville home.

Rescue is another service provided, our personnel are trained in water rescue, ice water rescue, auto extrication and search and rescue at a fire scene. We also provide confined space training courses.

The Brockville Fire Department is trained as Level 1 Responders to Haz Mat situations, giving us the skills to control the hazard area, identify the hazard and contact the appropriate agencies required to deal with the hazard.

Medical responses have become a major part of the Brockville Fire Department. This Department responds to EMS calls in conjunction with the Leeds Grenville EMS Service. These calls involve all life threatening situations. To be enabled to respond to these calls our personnel are trained in First Aid, CPR and defibrillation.
