Which streets are plowed first for snow removal?

City of Brockville - Snow & Ice Control

As per the City of Brockville’s policy for winter control operations, those roadways and sidewalks located within the City will be serviced according to their class designation.  The level of service is generally as per the following.  For specific details please refer to the actual policy available for reference at the Gord Watts Municipal Centre, 251 North Augusta Road.

ROADWAYS

CLASS 2

  • Arterial Roads
  • Roadway Driving Surface - Bare at 24 hours following storm completion
  • Maximum Snow Accumulation before Plowing Commences-5cm (6 hours to complete)
  • Snow removal when snow storage at edge of pavement:
    1. Impedes traffic flow
    2. Restricts intersection visibility
    3. Restricts parking meter accessibility

CLASS 3

  • Collector Roads/Bus Routes
  • Roadway Driving Surface - Bare at 24 hours following storm completion
  • Maximum Snow Accumulation before Plowing Commences-8 cm (12 hours to complete)
  • Snow removal when snow storage at edge of pavement:
    1. Impedes traffic flow
    2. Restricts intersection visibility
    3. Restricts parking meter accessibility

CLASS 4

  • Major Local Roads
  • Roadway Driving Surface - Centre Bare at 24 hours following storm completion
  • Maximum Snow Accumulation before Plowing Commences-8 cm (16 hours to complete)
  • Snow removal - restricted to specific areas on narrow streets or for parking meter accessibility

CLASS 5

  • Minor Local Roads
  • Roadway Driving Surface - Snowpacked
  • Maximum Snow Accumulation before Plowing Commences-10cm (24 hours to complete)
  • Snow removal - restricted to specific areas on narrow streets or for parking meter accessibility

CLASS 6

  • Dead Ends/Laneways
  • Roadway Driving Surface - Snowpacked
  • Maximum Snow Accumulation before Plowing Commences-15cm (48hours to complete)
  • Snow removal - restricted to specific areas on narrow streets or for parking meter accessibility

SIDEWALKS

WEEKDAY OPERATIONS

Snowplowing and/or Sanding will be completed on:

  1. Arterial/Collector/Bus Routes/Downtown Core within 48 hours of storm completion
  2. Designated sidewalks at school areas within 48 hours of storm completion

Snowplowing will generally only commence if more than 5 cm of snow has fallen.

Snowplowing or sanding on the remainder of City sidewalks will only be undertaken if time and manpower permits.

WEEKEND/HOLIDAY OPERATIONS

Sanding operations for:

  1. Overnight thaw/freeze conditions will be restricted to Downtown Core/Overpass Sidewalks only (Schedule C)
  2. Freezing rain will be restricted to Arterial/Collector/Bus Routes (Sat. only)/Downtown Core area (Class 1 Sidewalks)

Snowplowing operations will generally commence only if more than 5 cm of snow has fallen.  Plowing will be restricted to Arterial/Collector/Bus Routes (Sat. only)/Downtown Core area (Class 1 Sidewalks).

Driveway Entrance Clearing

It can be expected that snow will be plowed into driveways as a normal part of roadway and sidewalk snow clearing operations.   Owners of peroperties which the driveways service will be responsible for removal of the snow deposited in those entrances by city snow clearing operations.
