City of Brockville Leadership Update
October 6, 2021 – 4:30pm – Press Release: Brockville City Council Leadership Update
It is with deep regret that Brockville City Council announces the resignation of Jason Baker from his position as Mayor of the City of Brockville.
Jason was first elected to Brockville City Council in December 1997 and has dedicated 24 of years to serving our community. Jason was a champion for economic development and known for standing behind his beliefs and principles on difficult decisions.
As per the Municipal Act and Ontario Municipal Elections Act, Jason is no longer qualified to hold office due to his non residency status within the city of Brockville.
As a business owner and leader within the community, Jason has been an advocate for growing the local economy, through his role on the St Lawrence Corridor Economic Development Commission. He introduced the role of the citizen members on Standing Committees and pushed for stronger governance and financial oversight for the taxpayers of Brockville.
His vision and collaboration for a festive holiday event called the River of Lights was brought to life and admired by countless people annually at Blockhouse Island since 2019. Another of Jason’s initiatives as Mayor is the introduction of the Community Awards of Recognition in 2019. These Awards of Recognition honour a local group or individual for their contributions. This annual event is a truly inspiring occasion where each member of council offers recognition to just a few of the many positive contributions being made in our community.
“It has been an absolute honour to represent this beautiful city. I regret that the purchase of my dream home has unknowingly caused this issue and will keep me from finishing some of the work that we all started together. I wish all of you the best of luck in our shared goal of keeping the City of Brockville thriving into the future.” - Jason Baker
As Mayor of Brockville, Jason’s leadership and collaboration will be greatly missed by all. Brockville City Council and staff wish him the very best in his ventures.
Brockville City Council will declare Mayor Baker’s seat vacant at an upcoming council meeting and announce their decisions on how they intend to move forward.
The Municipal Act permits Brockville City Council 90 days to make their decision on how they intend to fill the vacancy.
Councillor Jane Fullarton is Acting Mayor for October.
