Brockville is conveniently located on the St. Lawrence River and has access to port facilities through the nearby Port of Johnstown located on the north bank of the river just 23 km east of the City. The Port has five wharves totaling 1,900 metres and the draft measures 9 metres at each wharf. The port is also served by the CNR and CPR with siding to facilitate 90 rail cars. The Seaway is one of the most important domestic and international transportation system in the world. Affecting an area containing nearly a third of the combined population of Canada and the United States; it was opened in 1959, and with progressive improvements since that has given access to ships with a draft of up to a maximum of 79.1 dm to all of the Great Lakes.
