City of Brockville Council Meeting Highlights of Tuesday August 27, 2024
2024 Municipal Hazardous and Special Products Waste Event
Annually, the City hosts a Municipal Hazardous and Special Products (HSP) Waste event where residents can dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste products. The 2024 event was held August 24th, 2024 in the parking lot of the Centennial Youth Arena. GFL Environmental Services Inc. was retained to provide the City with all requirements necessary to host the 2024 HSP Waste Event and will be funded through the City’s 2024 Solid Waste operating budget.
John Taylor Memorial Dedication of Park Space
John Taylor was a significant local figure in the Brockville community with numerous contributions to the municipality including serving as long-time chair of the Brock Trail Committee (BTC). In memory of John and his many contributions, Council approved a request from the BTC to dedicate a currently unnamed downtown park along the Brock Trail to Mr. Taylor. The selected park space is west of the Dailey Bridge and east of St. Paul Street and the BRT has proposed that this space will include a dedication monument that the BTC intend to fundraise for. Council acknowledged the many contributions of John Taylor.
Rotary Peace Pole proposed installation in Reynolds Park
A proposal from the Rotary Clubs of Brockville to install a Peace Pole at Reynolds Park was approved by Council. Rotary Peace Poles are square poles approximately five to eight feet tall and contain the wording “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in several languages. According to the Rotary’s website, there are 250,000 Peace Poles in countries around the world. The Brockville Peace Pole will be the second in Ontario.
Council Approves Two Zoning By-law Amendments on Parkedale Avenue
Council has approved the application for amendment to the Zoning By-law submitted regarding 2430 Parkedale Avenue. The amendment will allow for the property to be developed into a fully automated conveyor driven car wash, as the primary use. The lands where the car wash is to be located are on the north side of Parkedale Avenue, midway between Windsor Drive and Millwood Avenue (the former site of “Parkedale Cinemas”) as outlined in Report 2024-145.
Another application regarding the subject properties of 3087 & 3111 Parkedale Avenue was approved and will permit the properties to be merged and developed as a Shopping Centre and Self-Service Storage Facility as outlined in Report 2024-147. Both applications were the subject of a Public Planning Meeting held on July 2, 2024.
Cash-In-Lieu of Parking for 36-46 King Street W. Deferred
In a memo to Council, staff noted that Caber Developments Inc. have made significant progress towards finding a solution to the deficient parking for the proposed development at 36-46 King Street W. Caber have indicated that once the Agreement is in place they will share their plans for the additional parking with Council and the community. As such, a decision on requiring cash-in-lieu of parking was deferred to the September 24, 2024 Council meeting pending further information from Caber.

- Council acknowledged Rail Safety Week, September 23-29, 2024
- Council supported a resolution regarding the Canada Wide Early Learning and Child Care program and joined the Association of Municipalities of Ontario in calling on the Federal and Provincial Governments to fix the quotas for the For-Profit/Not-for-Profit child care spaces to permit more affordable spaces.
- Council proclaimed September 25, 2024 as Franco-Ontarian Day. The Franco-Ontarian Flag will be flown at Tunnel Bay from September 23-30, 2024
