Santa Claus Parade
Council formally recognized the tremendous efforts of the Rotary Clubs of Brockville in planning and executing many previous Santa Claus parades. Faced with some challenges, the Rotary Clubs have decided to pass the torch for organizing future parades. Taking over are William and Kate McKinnon, who plan to maintain the fun spirit of the parade while making some changes, including beginning earlier and shortening its length. They are also exploring ways to ensure the event is inclusive for all, particularly for children with sensory needs. The 2024 parade will be held on November 16th at 4:00 pm.
Sale of Industrial Lands on Crocker Crescent
Local business Northern Cables has purchased approximately 18 acres of vacant employment land on Crocker Crescent from the city. The company plans to build a minimum 100,000 square foot production facility within the next five years. The city is excited about this growth opportunity and was eager to collaborate as a supportive partner with Northern Cables.
Traffic Adjustments at Water St. W and Ormond St.
At a previous meeting, staff were directed to prepare a report regarding establishing Four Way Stops at the intersections of Ormond St. and Charlotte Place/Front St. and Water St. W. at Apple St. in response to area resident’s complaints and concerns. Following review, staff recommended the installation of an additional illuminated pedestrian crossover on Ormond Street like the one already in place further north on Ormond at Bramshot Park.
For the intersection of Water St. and Apple St., the recommendation to establish Apple Street as a one way northbound street was approved. Staff will install new signage, provide the required road line painting and notify the public of the changes.
Multi-Use Recreational Facility Update
Repair and replacement of various sections of the existing Memorial Center roof have been on hold to ensure the work is done in accordance with the future plans for the Multi-Use Recreation Facility (MURF) development. As the MURF design is now complete, it is indicated that the roof replacement can be completed independently of the other project. Staff provided a detailed report including many illustrations.
In addition, Council authorized application to the Community Sports and Recreation Infrastructure Fund (CSRIF) as it relates to the MURF project. This funding program offers $200,000,000 in total provincial funding and requires a 50/50 cost sharing between Ontario and the city with two funding streams: repair and rehabilitation and new builds.
Council also authorized the completion of necessary electrical design changes in order to accommodate the servicing requirements for the new MURF.
