Tourist Information Counsellor – Summer Student Vacancy (5 positions)

Reporting to the Visitor Experience Coordinator and the Tour Guide Supervisor, the Tourist Information Counsellors are key frontline staff providing visitor information services to tourists and locals and help run the day-to-day operations of the Visitor Information Centre and seasonal satellite locations. Enhancing the visitor experience pre and post arrival and while in destination, the Tourist Information Counsellor will promote Brockville’s tourist attractions, accommodations, services, businesses, restaurants, shopping, festivals, special events and cultural activities. Providing guidance, recommendations and responding to enquiries, communication with visitors may be in-person, over the phone, and by email.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greet and engage with visitors to Brockville by providing relevant information about the destination, tourism products, and enhancing the visitor experience through creative and innovative initiatives.
  • Delivering on-site customer support services including providing detailed directions, accommodation recommendations, making reservations for attractions, building vacation itineraries and packages, and providing information on local business and services.
  • Respond to enquiries in person, by email and by telephone in a friendly, knowledgeable, and resourceful manner in both official languages.
  • Collection of statistics on number of enquiries, visitation and solicitation of feedback from visitors.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Tourism Master Plan and the promotion of local events.
  • Representing Brockville and promoting the city and the 1000 Islands Region at various festivals and special events when applicable.
  • Developing and maintaining a high-level knowledge base of Brockville and the 1000 Islands Region tourism products and services and communicating that knowledge to the visitors. This includes historic buildings, museums, festivals, attractions, cultural activities and local services.
  • Assist with the delivery and stocking of the Visitor Information Guide, maps, and other brochures at the Visitor Information Centre, satellite locations and other locations where applicable.
  • Processing retail purchases at the Visitor Information Centre gift shop and reconciling a cash.
  • Working with local businesses to obtain current and detailed information regarding their attraction and / or services and updating listing details.
  • Assisting with other duties / assignments / projects as assigned by the Visitor Experience Coordinator, Tourism Development Coordinator, or Tourism Marketing Coordinators.

Essential Qualifications

  • Exceptional customer service skills and experience working with the public.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity and a passion for working with people is a must.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and listening skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both official languages (knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset)
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and deal with rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong knowledge of services offered to locals and visitors, tourism products available in the region and in the province of Ontario, and Canadian history including the City of Brockville.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, digital and social media platforms.
  • General office administration including client correspondence, data entry, maintaining and updating databases, running reports.

Working Conditions:

  • This position will be based out of the Brockville Tourism Visitor Information Centre located at 16 Market Street East, and various satellite locations throughout the City.
  • This position will work 40 hours per week and the schedule may include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • This position includes work both indoors and outdoors with exposure to various weather conditions, the ability to stand or sit for extended periods, bend, life and carry items (such as boxes) will be required.

To be eligible for the position listed above you must be currently attending school on a full-time basis and returning to full-time studies in the Fall of 2024 and show proof of enrollment or a valid student card, upon application submission and are able to work on a full-time basis from early May to the end of August 2024.
