Cemetery Groundskeeper

Salary: $55,432 - $66,186 (2024 Rate)

Permanent Full Time is 40 hours/week, plus comprehensive benefits and pension.

The City of Brockville invites applications from qualified and interested candidates for the above noted position in our Finance and IT Services Department.
Reporting to the Cemetery Services Supervisor, the Cemetery Groundskeeper is responsible for preparing graves and maintaining cemetery grounds, including but not limited to, excavating graves, burial functions (installing vaults, concrete crypts and urns), sodding, seeding, fertilizing, monument and marker setting, operating earth moving and lawn care equipment, and cemetery clean up.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • General grounds maintenance, including but not limited to:
    • Grass cutting.
    • Grass trimming.
    • Clearing of overgrown plants and shrubs.
    • Trimming of low-lying tree branches.
    • Winter maintenance operations – plowing cemetery laneways, shoveling around office and columbaria units.
  • Assist with the opening/closing of burial sites, including digging and setting up of burial greens/lowering devices (if applicable).
  • Assist with the installation of foundations for monuments and markers across the Brockville Cemetery and the St. Francis Xavier Cemeteries.
    • Includes building frames.
  • Provide coverage for the Cemetery Office as required, answering phones and emails as well as providing information to prospective clients and current families.
    • Note: part of coverage may include operating the Point-of-Sale system and updating cemetery records.
  • Assist the Cemetery Subforeman with daily activities and quarterly maintenance planning.
  • Overseeing graveside services as required.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.
  • Protect own health and safety and the safety of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attend all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety.
  • Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Essential Qualifications

  • A minimum of Grade 12, or equivalent education is required.
  • Valid “G” class driver’s license in the Province of Ontario.
  • Previous experience in general grounds maintenance, operating small tools and equipment including but not limited to lawnmowers, backhoes, snow blowers, tractors, chain saws and various landscaping tools.
  • Candidates must be capable of performing the physical requirements of the position which involves heavy pushing, pulling and lifting (e.g. lift objects of 25kg) on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and the capacity to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, responding with flexibility to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage timelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to confidentiality while exhibiting discretion and good judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player who can establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, ratepayers, and the public.

Working Conditions:

  • Outside work required, must be willing to work in inclement weather.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
