Water Systems Operator

Applications are invited from qualified and interested candidates for the above-noted C.U.P.E. Local 115 (Outside) position in the Water Systems Division of the Engineering & Infrastructure Department.

Under the direction of the Supervisor through the Chief Operator, the Water Systems Operator will carry out numerous duties in the operation of a Class III Direct Filtration water treatment facility, Class III Trunk distribution system and a Class II Local water distribution system.  Operations and maintenance of these facilities must be performed in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures, Safe Drinking Water Act, Environmental Protection Act, Municipal Drinking Water License, Drinking Water Works Permit and the Permit to Take Water.

Applicants must have a sound knowledge of hydraulics, pump and motor mechanics, water chemistry, source water protection, and the ability to work in a dynamic team environment.  The Water Systems Operator must have strong mechanical abilities and sound functional knowledge of municipal water treatment and distribution processes.  Instrumentation and/or SCADA system knowledge would be an asset.

Essential (Minimum) Qualifications:

  • A two (2) year post-secondary diploma in an Environmental program, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Must hold at a Class I Water Treatment certificate and an OIT certificate in Water Distribution, with the expectation to advance and obtain a Class III Water Treatment and/or Water Distribution certificate(s)
  • Hold the Entry-Level Drinking Water Operator Course.
  • Demonstrated experience in municipal waterworks operations.
  • Computer literacy using mobile tablet PC, word-processing, spreadsheets, and GIS database software.
  • Valid “G” Class Driver’s License. Possession of a valid “DZ” would be an asset.
  • Training in confined space entry, First Aid, CPR, Municipal Health and Safety, WHIMIS, Fall Arrest, trenching safety, and traffic control are assets to the position
  • Thorough working knowledge of the SDWA, OWRA, OHSA, and associated regulations are required.

Preferred (Asset) Qualifications:

  • Recognized operational time/experience in a municipal drinking water treatment and distribution facility.

Working Conditions:

  • The incumbent will work 40 hours per week and will participate in the rotational on-call schedule including weekend duties. When on call, the incumbent is expected to be available to respond to issues outside of regular working hours within a 30-minute response time.
  • Applicant must be capable of performing physical requirements of the position that involve heavy pushing, pulling and lifting (e.g. lift objects of 25 kg) on a regular basis; work in uncontrolled environment/conditions, work in confined spaces, work in a construction environment (traffic, uneven ground).
  • As a condition of employment, you will be required to submit medical documentation of physical ability to perform the duties of position.
