Bartholomew Street Traffic Review

March 9, 2026

Overview

The City of Brockville is planning the reconstruction of Bartholomew Street between James Street East and King Street as part of upcoming infrastructure improvements scheduled for 2026.

As part of this project, the City is also reviewing the future traffic configuration of Bartholomew Street between Pearl Street and King Street. As the street is redesigned, the roadway must meet modern standards for sidewalks, vehicle lanes, and safety. Because the existing street is narrow and does not meet current design standards, adjustments to traffic flow and parking may be required.

City staff are seeking feedback from residents and stakeholders before presenting a recommendation to City Council.

Current Street Configuration

Bartholomew Street between James Street East and King Street currently includes:

Two-way vehicle traffic

On-street parking

Sidewalks on both sides of the street

Utility poles located within the roadway

The current road width is approximately 6.8 meters, which does not meet modern standards for lane width and pedestrian infrastructure. This makes it difficult for two large vehicles to pass safely.

Street Features to be Considered

When determining the future layout of Bartholomew Street, several design requirements must be considered:

Number of vehicle lanes and widths – minimum 3 meters per direction of travel

Sidewalk configuration, one or both sides of the street – minimum 1.5 meters ea.

Width of boulevard for snow storage

Because the street corridor is limited in width, not all features can fit within the existing space without changes to traffic flow or parking.

Proposed Traffic Configuration Options

City staff are considering two potential options for the future traffic configuration.

Option 1 – One-Way Street with Parking

Bartholomew Street between Pearl Street and King Street would become:

Southbound one-way traffic

On-street parking on the east side

Option 2 – Two-Way Street with No Parking

Bartholomew Street between Pearl Street and King Street would remain:

Two-way traffic

No on-street parking

Provide Your Feedback

City staff are seeking feedback from residents and stakeholders regarding the proposed traffic configuration options for Bartholomew Street.

Once feedback is compiled, it is summarized and reported to City Council through the General Committee for consideration. City Council will then approve the street configuration that will be implemented on Bartholomew Street.

Residents are encouraged to complete the short survey located to the right of this page under Survey/Poll.

Survey deadline: March 15, 2026
